FIREFIGHTERS were called after thick black smoke billowed from a former plastics factory on an industrial estate.
Concerned members of the public called Peterlee Fire Station over fears the building on the town’s North West Industrial Estate was on fire. But when crews arrived it turned out to be a couple of plastic barrels on fire to the rear of the building, which is off Davy Drive.
The bins were completely destroyed by the fire, at 7.15pm on Sunday, and the cause is under investigation.
Meanwhile, crews were also called to a rubbish fire inside a bin at the Crimdon Dene Caravan Park, off the Coast Road, in the early hours yesterday.
The large metal bin was not damaged in the incident at 1.50am.
It is unclear what caused the fire.
