THOUSANDS of pounds worth of damage was caused when nine cars were destroyed in a blaze at a salvage yard.
Two crews from Peterlee Fire Station were called to the Copart compound, in Hackworth Road, on Peterlee’s North West Industrial Estate, where the motors, including a Jaguar, Vauxhall and a Volvo, were on fire.
Firefighters spent an hour-and-a-half tackling the flames after forcing their way onto the site at around 5.30pm yesterday.
Crew manager Mick Corfield said the cause was not believed to be suspicious as there had been no sign of forced entry and the area is covered by CCTV.
But he added: “If it had been a windy night the company would have lost a lot more cars than nine. In the compound itself there must have been 200-300 cars.
“With it being so close to the station we were only a minute away.”
