AN angler whose boat ran aground off Hartlepool had to be rescued by a lifeboat crew.

The cabin cruiser leisure vessel was not far away from the entrance to Hartlepool Marina when its engine failed.

And before the skipper had chance to re-boot the engine, the vessel started to drift, becoming caught on sand on the sea bed.

As a result he contacted HM Coastguard and staff there informed Hartlepool’s Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

A crew launched the all-weather lifeboat and went to the rescue.

The life-savers got to the stricken boat at around 3.30pm yesterday and towed it into the marina.

A Coastguard spokeswoman said: “It happened literally just outside the marina and was over in a short time.”
