FIREFIGHTERS and paramedics were called to the aid of a youngster who got his leg trapped in a bike while playing in a park.

A crew from Wheatley Hill Fire Station was called to the park off Luke Street, in Trimdon Colliery, to a report of the stricken five-year-old who was stuck, around 5.40pm on Saturday.

The fire service asked for help from an ambulance and paramedics arrived around 5.50pm.

But by 6.02pm, firefighters had managed to free the boy’s leg from the bike using cutting gear.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said paramedics attended but were stood down by the fire service and the boy did not get taken to hospital by ambulance.
