A MUM is launching a fundraising night to raise awareness of the rare condition which is limiting her life - and she has got the backing of a Hartlepool firm.
Hartlepool woman Nicola Crowther, 36, has organised a charity evening on behalf of the Gaucher’s Association. It will be held on Saturday, April 26, and the cause is close to her heart as she suffers from Gaucher’s Disease herself.
She’s hoping scores of people will attend the evening’s activities at the Headland Social Club from 7pm.
Tickets are just £2 and available on the night.
And Nicola has also won the support of Joanne Evans who runs the Hartlepool beauty salon Bellissima.
Joanne said: “Nicola is a customer of mine and she is having a charity event in the Headland Club to help raise awareness of this illness. To help support her charity we came up with the idea of a sponsored leg wax at my beauty salon. Nicola has found two guys who are up for it.”
Nicola was told by doctors she probably would not live beyond 30 after battling the type 3 form of the illness which affects every one of her internal organs except her heart.
But in recent weeks, her symptoms have eased slightly and Nicola felt it was time to say thank you to the association which has supported her.
Nicola, of Wingfield Close, has the most serious form of Gaucher’s which is a genetic disease in which a fatty substance accumulates in cells and certain organs.
The condition is so rare, she has to make trips to a specialist doctor in Cambridge for treatment once every three months where she receives enzyme replacement treatment.
Incredibly, she has lived with Gaucher’s Disease for 28 years.
Nicola was first diagnosed as a seven-year-old. She needed a hernia operation and could not stop bleeding afterwards. Later, X-rays showed she had no ball at the top of her hip.
She has since needed three hip replacements and needs another one in the next two years.
She said: “I am hoping to raise at least £500.”
