A BREAST-FEEDING awareness event was being held in Hartlepool.

The Big Latch On – a national synchronised breast-feeding event – is being held in Cafe One77, York Road, Hartlepool, on Friday, August 1, as part of World Breastfeeding Week.

Breastfeeding mums from Hartlepool were asked to head to the cafe at 10am for a 10.30am start, to coincide with other events up and down the country.

A spokeswoman for the event said: “On August 1 to 7 every year, to raise awareness of breast-feeding and the need for global support, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action organises World Breastfeeding Week.

“To mark the occasion thousands of women and their babies will gather in their own communities to take part in the Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event in multiple locations.

“Our local Big Latch On was taking place at Cafe 177.”

She added: “Breast-feeding contributes to the normal growth and development of babies and children, whereas those that aren’t breast-fed are at increased risk of infant morbidity and mortality, adult obesity, diabetes and cancer.”
