FIRE chiefs are reminding people to take extra care this weekend as firefighters stage another strike.

Fire Brigades Union members will walkout between 6pm and 10pm today and tomorrow as part of an on-going battle with the Government over pensions and conditions.

Stuart Errington, deputy chief fire officer for Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Friday and Saturday nights have the potential to be busy periods for us, so we are asking people to take extra care.”

The advice to be careful applies even more after drinking alcohol.

The fire service advises people not to sue chip pans after a night out and turn off all electrical appliances in the kitchen before going to bed.

Also be careful when using candles in the home, check your smoke alarm works and know your escape route.
