TWO trainees at an employment charity are celebrating after they were offered work at the Glastonbury Festival.

Karl Williams and Craig Robinson-Leigh completed the two-day stewarding and event cover course at the East Durham Employability Trust and were encouraged to apply for the jobs straight away by trainer Jane Rishworth.

And just two days later they both applied for jobs and were given offer of work on the same day.

It comes as the Mail is running its Work in Progress campaign that is aimed at highlighting the plight of jobseekers and their mission to find work.

Karl said: “When we found out we’d passed the course we were both really pleased. I just thought that was it, but then Jane, our trainer encouraged us and gave us the confidence to apply.

“I’m so glad Jane gave us the push we needed.”

Craig added: “When you’re looking for work you get so many knock backs that you come to expect it, so when we got the offer, I was really shocked. We’re dead excited though and I can’t wait to get there.”

Bill Marley, chief executive of the Employability Trust, said: “It’s excellent news, everyone is on a real high.

“The course the lads have been on is a two-day stewarding and event cover course.

“We only got the funding to start delivering the training in April and this was our very first course. It’s fantastic to get such a positive result so soon.”

Karl and Craig are no strangers to the trust as both have taken part in work experience there through Jobcentre Plus.

Since starting the training programmes in June last year, the trust has had 76 candidates through its doors, while 37 per cent have gone on to achieve paid employment.

Two out of every 10 volunteers have gained paid employment through the Employability Trust.

The East Durham Employability Trust, based on Palmer Road, Peterlee, is currently offering a variety of training courses including manual handling, introduction to Health & Safety at Work, and stewarding and event cover.

Courses are free to people who are in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance or Employment Support Allowance and are 18 or over.
