A HARTLEPOOL teenager is bidding to make a difference to statistics which show women make up only six per cent of the engineering workforce nationally.

Shelby Laybourn, 17, has joined the Wynyard-based engineering design and project management company Nortech Group as an instrumentation design apprentice.

She has joined up while completing her studies at NETA Training Group in Stockton.

She said: “I was very excited when I heard about the apprenticeship at Nortech. It’s a really well respected and growing company and I would love to be able to forge a long-term career here.

“I am now looking to push on with my studies and progress at Nortech by gaining further experience in the engineering sector. I would love to make it to the role of team leader one day.”

As well as her level 3 instrumentation training, Shelby is involved in numerous real life design projects.
