Latest job figures show more people are out of work in Hartlepool

MORE than 180 extra people are on the dole queue in the Hartlepool Mail area, according to the latest jobless figures.

In Hartlepool, there were 3,961 people claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance in January, up by 24 from 3,937 in December.

Both figures represent 6.8 per cent of the town’s working-age population.

In the former Easington district, the figure remains the same as the previous month, with 2,587 claiming the benefit, which is 4.9 per cent of the population.

The largest rise in the area was in the Stockton North constituency, which includes Billingham, Wolviston and Wynyard, where the number is up by 137 – from 3,446 in December to 3,583 in January.

The 3,446 claimants represent 6 per cent of the constituency’s working-age population.

There are an extra 26 people claiming the benefit in the Sedgefield constituency, from 1,980 in December to 2,006 in January.

The national jobless total was 2.34 million in the final quarter of last year, down by 125,000, giving a rate of 7.2 per cent.
