Plans for park power plant backed by MP

AN MP is delighted with news that a new jobs-boosting power plant is set to be created.

Stockton North Labour MP Alex Cunningham welcomed plans to create more than 750 jobs thanks to plans for the world’s largest renewable energy plant.

US firm Air Products will create energy from waste materials at the new plant on the New Energy and Technology Business Park, near Billingham.

It will be the first of its kind in the UK, and the largest of its kind anywhere in the world when it works to its capacity of producing 50 megawatts of energy, which is enough to power up to 50,000 homes.

The plant is expected to create up to 700 construction jobs and more than 50 permanent jobs once it starts operating in 2014.

Mr Cunningham said: “I am delighted that Air Products have confirmed their confidence in the Teesside workforce and that their plans can now go ahead.

“The jobs, both construction and permanent, are a welcome boost to the area and I hope it will be the first of many new power and green industry projects that will now go ahead.

“What we need now is a commitment from the Government to ensure that the components needed to develop power stations, wind farms and other projects are built in Britain and the jobs created here instead of mainland Europe.”
