A FISH and chip shop has landed a top title after being hailed one of the best in the country.

Delighted staff at the Seaton Carew-based Fish Face were celebrating after being judged as one of the best 50 premises.

The honour came in a competition run by fish and chip shop trade magazine Fry, with around 300 businesses in the running.

But the good news did not end there. Fish Face also got a 100 per cent mark in every category that it was judged on.

A mystery shopper visited the premises in The Front, at Seaton Carew, in April. They looked at eight factors including telephone inquiries, first impressions. service, food and drink, consumption, and staff.

Judges wanted to test each outlet on aspects of the trade that make fish and chips great – such as quality of food, atmosphere and customer service.

The cut-off point for making the 50 best fish and chip shops was 96 per cent.

But Fish Face manager Nicola Darley said: “We got 100 per cent in everything.

“It is amazing to be told that we are one of the best 50 in the business, especially when you think of how many fish and chip shops there are in the country.”

The shop’s prize included two tickets to the Fish Frying and Fast Food Show at Sandown Park racecourse on October 13.

Nicola added: “We had no idea we had won. We applied for the competition on the internet and they sent someone out as a mystery shopper.

“I think our success is down to the staff training. We also have an outlook that we aim to please. We like to have the best staff training and excellent customer service.”

The honour is the latest in a string of awards for Fish Face which celebrates its second birthday next month.

It has already won the Choice Chip Awards title in the Potato Council competition earlier this year, a Fish and Chip Shop Quality Award, and an honour for “Best Chippy Chips” in the region.

The shop front also won an award in the conservation category of the annual Hartlepool Civic Society Awards in 2012.

Nicola said: “Within two years, we have become an award-winning business and that is great. It is amazing that we are now one of the best 50 in the country.”

She said the success was also down to Fish Face being a family-run business.
