A training company in South Tyneside has thrown a lifeline to workers at doomed steelworks SSI by offering a possible route back into employment.
The Teesside-based firm’s closure has come at the cost of 1,700 jobs following a slump in the price of steel this year.

Now JPR Trade Skills Ltd, based at South Shields Business Works, in Henry Robson Way, South Shields, is offering free courses in tiling and plastering to 10 workers from the plant.
The courses are for five or 10 days, and usually cost £475 and £900 respectively.
Jimmy Carr, the owner of JPR Trade Skills, is hoping to give the former employees the opportunity to train for a new career in the construction industry.
He said: “We have courses available in tiling and plastering, and we can help to direct them. There is a huge market for both of them.
“The construction industry is flying at the moment, and is big to get into, so we want to help to get the ball rolling for these workers.
“What has happened down there is a tragedy. The people need to work, and we’re helping as best we can.”
There will also be a 30% discount on the courses for those who do not secure a free place, and an extra 5% off for those who are unemployed.
In addition, the company will have a taster day for all interested in entering the construction industry on October 28.
People will be able to visit and see which courses are available.
Anyone interested in signing up for the courses can visit www.jprtradeskills.com.
