AN unemployed mum has decided to fill in her time organising charity events to fund research into cancer – after losing her aunty to the disease.

Big-hearted Laura Bulley has lined up a string of events to raise money for Cancer Research in memory of her aunty, Dorothy Cheney, who died from the disease two decades ago aged just 31.

The 33-year-old, from the Owton Manor area of Hartlepool, said she could not sit around doing nothing after losing her job as a catering assistant. So she decided to raise money for charity while continuing to job hunt.

Laura, who is being helped by her friends, Kaylie Staniland and Stacey Frank, told the Hartlepool Mail: “I decided to do it for a combination of reasons.

“I lost my aunty who I loved very much when I was 13. She died from cancer.

“So it’s something that means a lot to me and I know my aunty would think it was a good idea too.

“Plus I’m not working at the minute and I’ve been trying my hardest to find a job, but it’s just so hard.

“So I thought rather than sitting on my back-side and not doing anything I’d rather be doing something.

“I thought raising money for a cause I believe in would be the perfect thing for me to do because I also love organising things.”

She added: “All the money raised from these events will go to Cancer Research so I’d love as many people to support them in order to raise a good sum of money.”

Laura, who has also previously worked in a call centre, has arranged a number of fundraising events ,including a karaoke competition at the Camerons Club, in Waldon Street, Hartlepool on November 30.

There will be a raffle, whereby the winner receives a percentage of the door takings.

Tickets for this event cost £2.50 or £3 on the door.

A second event will be a children’s Christmas party, again at the Camerons Club from 1pm until 4pm, on December 16, with tickets priced at £3.

There will be a disco, face painting, a visit from Santa, as well as cakes and biscuits for the party-goers.

A third fundraiser will be a Live and Unplugged event with bands Hobo Mojo and Remington Blends at The Nursery pub, off Hart Lane, on February 1, next year, from 7.30pm until 11pm. Tickets cost £3.

Tickets for any of the events can be bought from Laura on 07865582891 or on the door on the day.
