FOUR fire crews spent two hours tackling a blaze at a derelict care home.

Two crews from Stranton fire station, one from the Headland and one from Billingham were called to Homewood House, in Stockton Road, at 1.30am on Monday.

The blaze started on the ground floor of the two-storey building, but quickly spread to the roof.

The building is in the process of being demolished, but watch manager John Moore from Stranton Fire Station said there were signs that someone had been living there and the cause is being treated as suspicious.

Police are aware of the incident and are investigating.

Meanwhile, a crew from Stranton was called to deal with a bin fire in Throston Grange Lane, Hartlepool, at 8pm on Sunday evening and then an hour later had to put out a rubbish fire near to Queens Meadow Business Park off the A689.

Both fires were put out inside 10 minutes.
