Cemetery is set to get cafe

VISITORS to a cemetery will have somewhere to eat if plans for a cafe get the green light.

Hartlepool Borough Council wants to make structural alterations and extensions to the Stranton Cemetery Lodge building, within the Brierton Lane-based cemetery.

If given the go-ahead, the building’s purpose would change form council office and training use to a cafe, along with associated parking, subject to a separate planning application.

The cafe would be based on the ground floor of the building, which is on the draft Local List for Hartlepool and therefore identified as a heritage asset.

A report to the council’s planning committee said: “A small extension to the rear will provide kitchen and servery together with a covered patio area.

“The extensions and patio will be finished in materials to match the existing building.

“The patio will have a pitched slate roof and sliding glass doors to the rear which would allow the patio to be open on the north-west elevation.

“No alterations are proposed for the first floor of the building.”

The opening hours of the cafe would be 8.30am-4pm from Monday to Saturday and from 8.30am-noon on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

The council has received four letters of no objection.

The planning committee is recommended to approve the application when it meets on Friday, January 6, subject to conditions including more details about parking arrangements being provided and approved.
