A COMMUNITY centre and mosque has been officially opened during a ceremony attended by a string of officials and residents.
The Salaam Centre, in Murray Street, has been open for a number of months now, but bosses organised an official opening after the mosque upstairs and all of the facilities in the community centre were completed.
Hartlepool MP Iain Wright, chairman of Hartlepool Borough Council Stephen Akers-Belcher, various ward councillors and residents had a look round the centre and mosque.
Rajab Malik, chairman of the Salaam Centre, said: “It was fantastic to welcome so many people from the community as well as councillors and the MP.
“The centre is for everybody to use and we want to work together with people in the community.
“We wanted to show people what we have on offer here.
“We had a great turn out and there was a great atmosphere in the centre.”
As well as the mosque upstairs in the building, the centre is also home to a gym, rooms which can be hired out and a large hall.
People can also drop in for information about immigration, council tax and any other issues.
Hartlepool MP Iain Wright said: “It was a great event and I enjoyed having a look around.
“The community was invited to have a look around because this is a facility for the whole community.
“It has all been possible thanks to donations from the community and it helps bring people together which is great.”
