Champ flies the flag in Big Six

THE top amateur golfers in the North of England are competing in Hartlepool today.

The English Golf Union’s Northern Counties Championship, at Seaton Carew Golf Club, will see the best players from seven counties completing over 36 holes in a bid to be named the best in the region.

Teams of six players from Northumbria, Durham, Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria, Yorkshire and the Isle of Man all practised at the Tees Road club yesterday before teeing off at 8am today.

Among those representing Durham in the competition, known as the Big Six, is Hartlepool’s Seaton Carew champion Scott Phillips.

Club captain Jane Longhorn said: “The competition comes to Hartlepool about every seven years.

“The standard of the golf is extremely high. These are the best amateur players in this part of the country.”
