Chance to train as a ref

WANNABEE whistlers are being encouraged to sign up for a course training football referees.

Hartlepool Borough Council’s sport and recreation service has joined forces with Durham FA to arrange the course which will be held at the Grayfields Sports Pavilion, in Jesmond Road, on April 2 and 3.

Participants must be aged 14 or over to take part and the course is open to both budding male and female referees.

Prior to the course starting, candidates will be required to attend an introduction evening at the pavilion on March 22 from 6pm-7.30pm.

The course will cover five modules, including the completion of six matches as a trainee referee. Within the modules, candidates will receive an introduction to the laws of the game as well as help in developing the practical skills needed to be a football referee.

The course costs £80 for over-16s and £60 for under-16s. These charges include £30/£10 (depending on age) for the overall course fee, £20 for compulsory attendance at a child protection workshop, £15 for an FA CRB check and a £15 annual referee affiliation fee.

Places on the course are limited to 20, so anyone who is interested is advised to reserve their place as soon as possible by contacting Mark Smith, at Durham FA, on (0191) 3872929 or emailing:
