Charges are set to be introduced to tip DIY waste in Hartlepool
Charges are set to be introduced to dump certain types of waste at the town's tip.
Starting from Saturday, April 1, Hartlepool Borough Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) will take payments for waste it says is not generally generated from homes.
Sections of double-bagged cement-bonded asbestos will cost £7.20 to ditch, while a tyre will cost £3.20 to dump, plasterboard £6, and bags of up to 25kg of soil, hardcore, rubble, hardcore including ceremic bathroom units and sections of plate glass will cost £3 each.
Bags of mixed waste will not be accepted and permits are needed for those who want to get rid of asbestos and tyres.
The disposal of everyday household recyclables, general household waste and green garden waste will continue to be free.
Denise Ogden, the council’s director of regeneration and neighbourhoods, said: “We aim to provide the most comprehensive recycling and waste disposal service possible.
“However, there is no obligation for household waste recycling centres to take waste that isn’t produced in the normal day-to-day occupation of a home.
“These types of waste are very expensive to dispose of, but by applying a charge, the council can continue to offer disposal facilities for these materials to residents who would otherwise find them difficult to get rid of.”
On arrival at the HWRC, residents will have to agree with a member of staff the type and volume of waste, determining the charge.
No cash or cheques will be accepted on site, only credit or debit cards.
Payment can also be made at the civic centre where a receipt will be given and the receipt should be taken to the centre when disposing of waste.
Starting from the same date, the HWRC will operate from 9am to noon and 1pm to 6pm from April to October and 9am to noon and then 1pm to 4pm from November to March.
A leaflets are being handed out to visitors to the Burn Road site.
