An abundance of growing talent was on display at this year’s Hartlepool Horticultural Show.

The weekend of summer fun saw visitors enjoy various attractions and check out the impressive range of flowers, fruit and vegetables on display.

Held at the Rift House Recreation Ground on Saturday, August, 18, and Sunday, August 19, the theme of the event was Go Wild.

The event, organised by Hartlepool Borough Council, coincided with Hartlepool Show which harked back to years gone by, while adding a modern horticultural twist to the weekend.

It saw visitors enjoy a whole host of attractions, ranging from live music performances by youngsters, to fairground rides, BMX displays and outdoor theatre.

Spectators were also able to check out the award-winning flowers, fruit and vegetables on display from across the North-East at the event’s horticultural festival.

Horticultural show secretary Tom Hammond was delighted with the success of the show, saying that this year attracted 774 entries.

Taking home the title of Overall Best in Show was William Bonas, from Newcastle, with his Chrysanthemums.

Mr Bonas also won the Carnations section.

Other winners included; Ian Hall, from Darlington, who won the Dalhias category; Paul Smith from Hartlepool, who took the overall title for fuchsias and Phil Orley from Hartlepool who won the Pelargoniums.

Phil also won the Gladioli category.

Malcolm Read from Northallerton won the best Sweet Peas; Kevin Tritchler won most successful in the vegetables and P.Moore won best in the allotment section.

Marion Jacobs from Hartlepool won the Home Crafts section.

Mr Hammond, who has been involved in the show for 20 years, said: “The event has been going since 1869 and this year has been one of the most successful shows that we have ever had.

“We have had 45 displays and 774 entries, so we are absolutely delighted with how it has gone.

“We are delighted with the number of entries - there were much more than we thought we were going to get with the bad weather.”

Organisers said more than 1,000 people went along on the first day of the event which saw visitors enjoy a whole host of attractions, ranging from live music performances by youngsters, to fairground rides, BMX displays and outdoor theatre.
