News that a marina restaurant has closed after citing car parking charges among the reasons for its demise prompted a big response online.
Dozens of readers commented on the Mail’s website and Facebook page on the issue of parking at Navigation Point following the closure of Jack Rabbit Slims American-style diner this week, with owner Adam Taylor blaming parking charges.
Mail reader serf said on hartlepoolmail.co.uk: “The marina doesn’t have a reputation for being family friendly, even though it might be when the heavy drinkers are not down there.
“If it was a top notch restaurant, people would not worry about the parking charges. It is not difficult to spend £10 on parking while dining in Newcastle.
“Image is everything and Hartlepool doesn’t have one.”
Another website user, ktal88, commented: “How can he blame car parking charges? They came into force in 2010, this restaurant opened 18 months ago. Don’t like the charges, don’t open a restaurant there, do your research first. He needs to look a little closer to home. Over priced average food is the reason for low footfall.”
Tiara said: “Nothing to do with car parking. It was the most expensive place to eat and the food was less than average”.
Phil Swales said: “Shame, it was a great little place. Another nail in the coffin. This town is dead.”
And reader diS me asked: “Mandale already charge massively inflated rent to businesses at Navigation Point, why the need to charge for parking too? They’re squeezing the life out of the area.”
On Facebook, Sarah Bake said of the parking fees: “youd be deluded to think they’re NOT a problem”.
Kathleen Mathieson commented: “We avoid the marina when out in the car because of the parking charges. Love that there are so many good eateries and hope that something can be done to reduce the costs of parking to encourage and sustain the business there.”
Jonathan Mcgann said: “50p an hour is so expensive, if its that bad knock it off the bill like brewers fayre do near hospital. Maybe the quality and price of food is the reason its closed/same quality half the price at Wetherspoons.”
Paul Skinner suggested: “Let’s relax the parking charges for a year and it will speak for its self.”
Steven Evans added: “That place had the potential to be a little gold mine. The fact of the matter is that the food was not up to much. For the prices being charged. It’s a shame because I think Hartlepool needs a decent American diner.”
Ian Saunders said: “Stopped going down since they put the parking charges in used to love going down for a breakfast or even a Sunday morning coffee”.
