Hartlepool is getting right behind our boys and hoping England can book a place in Sunday’s World Cup Final with a win over Croatia tonight.

Gareth Southgate’s young team, including North East former Sunderland players Jordan Pickford and Jordan Henderson, will kick-off tonight’s semi-final at 7pm in Moscow.

Should they win, it will be the first the time the Three Lions has reached a major tournament final since Alf Ramsey’s team won the World Cup in 1966.

Volunteers at the RNLI lifeboat station, in Ferry Road, are flying the flag for the Three Lions and volunteer crew member Darren Killick said: “We are all keen to see the team do well on Wednesday night after the fantastic win against the Swedish team last Saturday.

“Win or lose I’m sure the England team will do their best and hopefully we will have plenty to smile about during our own Thursday night training session the following day at the Ferry Road lifeboat station.”

Town MP Mike Hill said today the “spirit of the nation has been lifted” thanks to the team’s performance so far.

“Since the first kick of the first England match we have dared to dream and the Three Lions have just got stronger and stronger,” said Mr Hill.

“Gareth Southgate and the team have done us proud so far, the spirit of the nation has been lifted and long may that continue.

“Well done in particular to local lads Jordan Henderson and Jordan Pickford and I just can’t wait for us to get to the final.”

Grahame Morris MP, who represents the Easington constituency, said: “The competition has been marvellously uplifting and has brought the country together.

“I’m particularly proud of the North East contingent of the two Jordans, Henderson and Pickford, who have been outstanding and wish them every success.

“I’m also pleased that I drew England in the Parliamentary sweepstake and will give my winnings to the East Durham Food Bank when we win.”

And Coun Christopher Akers-Belcher, leader of Hartlepool Borough Council, said: “To see the Three Lions bring football home and lift the World Cup trophy would make this a truly unforgettable summer.

“On behalf of everyone here in Hartlepool, we want to wish the squad out in Russia the very best of luck tonight. We’re all backing you every step of the way - come on England!”
