THE funeral of a long-serving councillor will be held next week.
Mourners will gather at St Cuthbert’s Church, in Manor Way, Peterlee, on Wednesday, April 11 at 1pm to pay their last respects to Durham County Councillor Barbara Sloan.
Coun Sloan, who represented the Peterlee West division, passed away on Friday, March 30.
As reported by the Hartlepool Mail, the 75-year-old was found dead at her home after relatives became concerned that her curtains were still shut on Friday lunchtime.
Coun Sloan, a mother-of-two and grandmother-of-three who was known by family and friends as “Babs” had been a Liberal Democrat councillor for 24 years.
Having previously served on Easington District Council, she was elected to the county council in May 2008 and was also an East Durham Homes board member.
County council chairman, Councillor Dennis Morgan, said: “Coun Sloan was an able and distinguished member of the county council who will be greatly missed by her colleagues.”
Council leader Simon Henig said: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with Barbara’s family and friends at this time of sadness.”
Councillor Nigel Martin, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on the county council, said: “Babs was a councillor who dedicated herself to her local community for many years, first as a member of District of Easington Council and, since reorganisation, as a county councillor.
“The Liberal Democrat Group has lost a deeply valued member.
“My thoughts are with her family at this sad time.”
The cause of death is being investigated by the coroner.
