A NERVOUS couple are counting down the days until the biggest event in their lives.
Bride-to-be Gemma Kerr and fiancé Andrew Bazeley admitted both excitement and nervousness was mounting.
Gemma, 28, and Andrew, 25, will marry on board HMS Trincomalee on Friday, September 6, after winning this year’s Bride of the Year competition run by the Hartlepool Mail in conjunction with Robert Usher Photography.
Gemma, from the Rossmere area of Hartlepool, admitted: “Andy is getting nervous with thinking about his speech and making sure everything goes alright on the day.
“But we can not wait for it to come round. It seemed like a long way off when we first won the competition but it is getting close now and we are really excited.”
The couple are also being recognised by the public after their regular appearances in the Hartlepool Mail as they collect each part of their prize.
“I have had a few people stopping me and saying ‘are you the Bride of the Year’,” said Gemma. “Everywhere you go, people seem to know your face. It’s in the street and in the shopping centre.”
As the big day approaches, the couple are putting the finer touches to their wedding.
Gemma’s aunt Sheila Simmons will be doing a reading during the ceremony in the Captain’s Cabin on board HMS Trincomalee.
And she has relatives who will be travelling from as far as Lavendon in Buckinghamshire.
Gemma and Andrew will marry almost six months after they won the competition in a tense finals night on board HMS Trincomalee.
Gemma previously told the Mail how her six-year-old daughter Madeline was the inspiration behind mummy becoming Hartlepool’s new champion.
She said her daughter spent time writing down the things that she and Andrew could say to the Bride of the Year judges. Madeline will be a bridesmaid on the day.
During the finals night on board HMS Trincomalee, the couple were asked what they love about each other.
Gemma said: “He is so lovable and he will do anything for anyone.” While Andrew said: “The first time I saw her, I knew she was the one.”
The couple became engaged after attending the wedding of Gemma’s brother Graham at Lake Garda in Italy .
It was just the spur Andrew needed to pop the question himself.
