A NEW world champion has been crowned in a unique Easter-time sport.

Craig Stoker, 30, beat off competition from around 30 other entrants in the 31st annual World Egg Jarping Championships, held at The Hearts of Oak pub, in Peterlee, yesterday to come out on top.

The dad-of-seven and painter and decorator from Peterlee even beat off seven competitors who challenged the winner after the main event.

Competition referee Roy Simpson said: “From a big entrance of almost 30 contestants Craig won through to be this year’s champion.

“The competition started 31 years ago in Peterlee Cricket Club when a big thing was made of Easter, including an Easter bonnets competition, painted eggs and, of course, jarping on Easter Monday to finish off the holiday.

“Since the club suffered a fire in 2010 it has not re-opened and the Hearts of Oak management took over the running of the competition, which is a bit like conkers.”

Hearts of Oak landlord Peter Webster said: “We had an absolutely fabulous afternoon. Craig wasn’t even going to enter the competition as he didn’t know how long he was going to stay.

“We had a few eggs left over after the competition so we had a competition to challenge the winner and he still won. I think he just picked a good egg at the time.”
