A SUPERFAST fundraising drive is under way to get two hip-hop crews to America.

The Hartlepool Mail told earlier this month how town crews Ruff Diamond and their junior outfit Lil Diamondz had qualified to take part in the world finals at the Red Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, USA, from Wednesday, July 27, to Monday, August 1.

But £15,000 is needed to cover the cost and the campaign to raise the cash is well under way.

Zac Healey runs the hip- hop academy, Urban Rockz, in Hartlepool, where both crews are based.

He said: “Things are already going well.

“We have sent off as many sponsor letters as we can to get financial help from businesses. A lot of them have said they are interested and have asked for more details”

But Zac is not just relying on business support. Parents and crew members are doing their own fundraising to boost the total and Zac revealed the impressive itinerary which has already been lined up.

l Two Ruff Diamond members, Jason Lund and Lewis Cope, were due to tackle an eight-mile sponsored walk from 10am today, starting at the Urban Rockz studio in Whitby Street South.

l Ruff Diamond will be involved in a charity night at the Rovers Quoits Club on June 24 which is already a sellout.

l Another sponsored walk will be held on Saturday, June 25, by Ruff Diamond members.

l The crew will be dancing at the Throston Primary School strawberry fair from 12.30pm to 1pm on Saturday, July 2.

l Ruff Diamond will hold a fundraising night at the Staincliffe Hotel on Friday, July 8, with highlights including hip- hop competitions and performances by both Ruff Diamond and Lil Diamondz. Tickets are £4 and Zac thanked the Staincliffe for providing a room free.

l Ruff Diamond will be dancing at the Darlington Music and Arts Festival on Sunday, July 17.

The Ruff Diamond crew is made up of 13 to 17-year-olds and they were runners-up in last year’s UK event and performed well at last year’s world championships.

Lil Diamondz, is made up of dancers aged under 13 and they would be performing at Las Vegas for the first time.
