THIEVES have stolen lead from the roof of a church.

The metal was stripped from the roof of St Cuthbert’s Church, Church Road, in Billingham.

Police believe the criminals may have wanted to sell the lead – which was marked with Smart Water – for scrap, in exchange for cash.

Today officers appealed for anyone who may have seen the theft taking place, or who knows the people responsible, to get in touch.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: “The lead was taken sometime over the past few days from St Cuthbert’s Church in Billingham, and was marked with Smartwater. This means it can be traced back to where it was stolen from. The value of the theft is relatively low although roofers will have to be employed to repair it, which can run into hundreds of pounds.” Anyone who can help with the investigation should telephone 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
