Car wash owner ‘gutted’ by arson that almost blew up oil tank

A CAR wash owner has been left devastated after an arson attack on a caravan that spread to an explosive oil tank and building.

Sagir Hussain arrived at his UK Hand Car Wash business at Camerons Holdings, in Hartlepool’s Mainsforth Terrace, on Sunday morning to find the caravan ablaze.

The fire brigade’s quick response managed to prevent a metal tank full of oil from exploding as well as other businesses on the site being damaged.

An investigation has revealed the caravan, which was used as an office, was deliberately set on fire.

Mr Hussain, 36, said: “I got a phone call at about 8.45am on Sunday and came down and the fire brigade and police were everywhere.

“I have had a few daft things like broken windows but nothing like this. If anyone had been asleep in the caravan they could have been killed.

“I am gutted. I never slept all night. I hope they catch them. It is no accident. Every night I take all the electrics out.”

Fire crews spent over an hour tackling the blaze at the back of the building.

Watch manager Jason Wood, of Stranton Station, said there was a risk of explosion after the fire spread to storage tank with oil in it.

He said: “The owners of the units have been very lucky in that we got there quickly, otherwise they could have lost the building.”
