A Hartlepool dentist who killed a college tutor by running over him in his car has been sentenced today.

David Coutts, 59, struck James Gibson, who worked at Hartlepool Sixth Form College, with his Jaguar car in Grange Road on Wednesday, December 19, last year.

He then accidentally ran over Mr Gibson as he struggled to operate the car’s unusual automatic gear system.

The 28-year-old died on his way to hospital in an ambulance.

Coutts, of Northbrook Court, Hartlepool, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

He was banned from driving for a year at Teesside Crown Court and must do 250 hours unpaid work as part of a 12-month community order.
