A vile rapist who attacked a terrified schoolgirl has been put behind bars for 15 years.

Perverted Derrick Day targeted the youngster and subjected her to a sickening ordeal.

The effect upon her will last for life.

Judge Penny Moreland

A judge at Newcastle Crown Court said the victim’s life has been blighted forever by what Day did to her.

Day, 51, of Eleventh Street, Blackhall, County Durham, was convictied of three charges of rape, three of sexual assault and one of attempted rape by a jury after a trial.

His continued denials meant the already traumatised victim had to give evidence against him.

Judge Penny Moreland said he must sign the sex offenders register and abide by the terms of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for life.

The judge told him; “The jury were sure you subjected her to a series of sexual assaults.

“She spoke of her vivid recollection of the abuse and how that made her feel.

“This is appalling offending and has had a dreadful effect on her.

“The effect upon her will last for life.

“I have seen the victim impact statement. It cannot be calculated, the damage you have done to her as a result of what you did.”

The court heard Day has no previous convictions but has one caution for common assault.

His barrister Lee Fish said Day continues to deny the offences he was convicted of.

Mr Fish said; “He maintains he did not commit these offences.

“He is essentially of previous good character. There is no suggestion he has behaved in this way before or since.

“There is no evidence this defendant has behaved in this way towards anyone else.”

Mr Fish said despite his denials, Day sppreciated he must face a substantial prison sentence.
