An East Durham mum says she fears for her family’s safety as they holiday in Tunisia close to where gunmen opened fire.

Stephanie Ellis, says panic set in when news broke of the tragedy in the resort town of Sousse, yesterday.

At least five British tourists are believed to have been amongst the 37 people killed in the attack - according to Tunisian officials.

Mrs Ellis’ family, mum Jean, Stepdad Garry and brother Luke Parsonage, flew out to Tunisia on Monday. All three had been on the beach when the gunmen opened fire.

Mrs Ellis, from Horden said: “When I heard what had happened I tried phoning my mam but her phone was switched off. My brother eventually got back to me and said they were fine but were now locked in their hotel and surrounded by armed police.

“My brother said they heard the gun fire and then everyone just ran back to the resort.

“They flew out on Monday and are supposed to be there for a week but they just want to come home now.

“They have said everyone is being kept within the hotel grounds but no one really knows what’s going on.”
