A FUNERAL director charged with a string of alleged sex assaults on young boys has appeared in court.

Gerald Martin – of Mason and Gerald Martin Funeral Directors, in Park Road, Hartlepool – made an appearance at Teesside Crown Court in Middlesbrough.

The 64-year-old has denied all 10 of the alleged offences, which date back decades, when he made his first appearance at Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court earlier this year.

Martin, of Valley Close, in the West Park area of Hartlepool, is accused of five attempted serious sexual assaults, and five charges of indecent assault, against two boys.

The Teesside Crown Court hearing set out two further court dates for the funeral director – another administrative hearing on December 5 at which Martin’s attendance is excused.

Lawyers set another date of December 15 for a pre-trial review, at which he must attend.

The trial is set to go ahead on January 19 next year.

Martin was released on unconditional bail until that time.
