RESIDENTS are being warned to be on their guard against rogue traders looking to cash in on the recent stormy weather.

Trading standards officials at Hartlepool Borough Council are urging people to watch out for doorstep callers offering to carry out work to repair damage caused by the high winds.

Principal trading standards and licensing officer Ian Harrison said: “Our advice is simple – do not deal with doorstep sellers. They can be unscrupulous and use a range of persuasive tactics to make what they are offering sound too good to be true”.

Tips include never sign up on the spot, check a trader’s identity, be wary of special offers, get a second opinion and ensure you are given rights to cancel a contract.

Anyone with rogue trader concerns should call trading standards on (01429) 523362.
