POLICE are continuing to hunt the driver of a car that hit a cyclist and fled from the scene.

A 39-year-old woman was left with head injuries when she was struck by the silver BMW last week.

It happened on Thursday at the junction of Lothian Road and York Road in Hartlepool.

Just beforehand, police had signalled for the driver to stop, at around 2.25pm, but the car sped away down York Road.

It was found abandoned in nearby Barbara Mann Court, but the driver had made off on foot.

Cleveland Police have confirmed no arrests have yet been made despite appeals for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman said: “Inquiries are ongoing.”

The victim was rushed to the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton, by ambulance where she was treated for minor head injuries. They were non-life threatening.

The road was closed from Victoria Road to Mill House Leisure Centre for around an hour after the crash while police and paramedics stayed on the scene. It reopened around an hour later.

Anyone with information should call Acting Sergeant Chris Mellor by calling 101 quoting reference number 202938.
