TWO callous burglars who targeted the home of a 94-year-old dementia sufferer have been jailed.

James Pearson, 35, and accomplice Anthony Smithson, 30, sneaked into the man’s Hartlepool home while the confused victim was at home.

They stole credit and bank cards, which they later used to withdraw £1,600 from the man’s, and his elderly partner’s, savings account.

Pearson, of Wharton Terrace, Hartlepool, was jailed for four years and Smithson, from Saltholme Close, Middlesbrough, got 21 months’ in prison.

Judge Tony Briggs said: “Those who prey on the elderly do so at their peril.”
