A man has been arrested after an armed robbery at a Hartlepool Post Office.
A man entered the Nisa Store in Owton Manor Lane at 2pm today, wielding a knife and a hammer.
He threatened staff before making off with a substantial amount of cash.
He was detained near to the scene by passers-by and held until police arrived.
Police say a 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and a substantial amount of money was recovered.
Someone who works nearby said: “I didn’t see what happened but I know there was an armed robbery.”
It is understood that the door was locked as the man tried to exit the shop and that he smashed the bottom window pane with a hammer and tried to crawl through it.
Last night the bottom pane of glass in the door was boarded up.
The witness added: “When the lad tried to get away, they lowered the shutter and his trainers got stuck. He had a hammer and a knife.”
Police officers were in the shop tonight looking through CCTV with staff.
A spokesman for Cleveland Police said inquiries are ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to call 01642 326 326.
