A MAN has appeared in court charged with the robbery of a bank, an attempted robbery of a bargain store and a theft from a pound shop.

Hugh Lawson Gallon, 41, of no fixed abode, appeared before Peterlee Magistrates’ Court this morning.

It follows an incident which happened at around 12.30pm on Saturday at Lloyds bank in Yoden Way in the town.

It is alleged a man armed with a knife threatened a member of staff at the premises and made off with a sum of money from the safe.

Police were called to the scene and less than 30 minutes later arrested a 41-year-old man in the town centre.

After being questioned he was last night charged with the robbery at the bank, along an attempted robbery at B&M Bargains in the town and a theft at Poundworld in Peterlee, also on Saturday.

He appeared before magistrates this morning and has been remanded in custody until his next appearance, which will be at Durham Crown Court on Monday.
