ONE man is fighting for his life and three others have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an assault in Hartlepool this morning.
Police currently have Tankerville Street in the town cordoned off while they carry out their investigations into the incident.
They are appealing for information about the incident which happened at around 9.15am this morning.
A spokesman for Cleveland Police said the investigations are at an early stage.
Officers confirmed a 33-year-old man was taken to James Cook University Hospital suffering from significant head injuries and is in a critical condition.
The assault took place in the street and the area near a blood-splattered car was cordoned off to prevent anyone entering the scene.
Three men have been arrested on suspicion of attempt murder and are currently in custody.
The spokesman said: “A cordon has been put in place in the street while early investigations continue to establish how the man came about his injuries.”
Stunned neighbours said they couldn’t believe what had happened.
One, who did not want to be named, said: “I only moved into this street a few weeks before Christmas, but this is the first trouble I have known.
“I didn’t know a thing about it until the police knocked at my door asking if I had seen anything.”
Another, who was staying with a friend in the street overnight, said: “I heard shouting in the street in the night, but I didn’t bother getting up because you expect to hear people shouting and being a bit rowdy on a Saturday night when you live in a town centre.”
Anyone with information is asked to call police on the non-emergency number 101.
