A MAN has appeared before magistrates in connection with an incident which saw a fire break out at a town petrol station.

Peter Cavanagh, 42, from Jute Grove in Hartlepool, appeared before Hartlepool magistrates charged with arson with intent, robbery and theft after an incident at Shell Garage, on Easington Road, at around 6.50pm on Monday, November 3.

Magistrates said that as the case was too serious for them to deal with, it was to be sent to Teesside Crown Court, where Cavanagh will appear on December 3.

No plea was entered to any of the three charges, and Cavanagh was bailed on the condition he does not approach any prosecution witnesses, observes a curfew from 7pm-7am and lives at his home address.

Chairman of the bench Doreen Goode also ordered Cavanagh to stay away from the Shell petrol station on Easington Road as part of his bail conditions.
