A CASH office manager has appeared in court accused of stealing more than £84,000 from a supermarket giant.

Karen Barrass is charged with one offence of theft by employee.

The 48-year-old, a cash office manager for Morrisons in Hartlepool, is alleged to have manipulated figures to steal £84,260 from the store between June 20, 2010, and July 13, 2013.

The defendant appeared before Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court and did not enter a plea to the charge of theft by employee.

Chairman of the bench Doreen Goode sent the case to be dealt with by a judge at Teesside Crown Court, in Middlesbrough, on October 8.

Barrass, of Burdon Place, in Peterlee, was released on unconditional bail until that time.

The charges follow an internal probe by supermarket bosses.

The store, in Clarence Road, created around 350 jobs when it opened in 2003 after being built on the site of the town’s former greyhound stadium.
