Police were called to Eddleston Walk, in Hartlepool, shortly after 1am on Tuesday where the woman was found with serious injuries.

Officers say she was later pronounced dead at the same.

A 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and continues to be quizzed by police.

Upset neighbours were in a state of shock this morning when they discovered the news of the death of Mrs Smeaton, who owned Ange’s Chippy, in Owton Manor Lane.

One neighbour, who wished not to be named, said: “She was just so lovely, she would do anything for you and was always so friendly.

“To be honest she was very happy go lucky, you would never hear her complaining about anything.

“I just can’t believe what’s happened. I heard a bit of a commotion during the night which woke me up and then when we found out what’s happened to her this morning. I think it’s just left everyone shocked.”

Another neighbour said: “Angela tended to keep herself to herself, but she was still always so friendly and kind.

“You never think anything like this is going to happen on your own doorstep, it’s heartbreaking.”

Police remain at the scene of the death today and Mrs Smeaton’s home is cordoned off while forensic experts carry out their investigation.

The death is being treated as suspicious and a post-mortem examination will take place.
