A man and woman arrested after a man was found with serious head injuries have been bailed by police.
The 56-year-old victim was taken to hospital after being found at an address in Rydal Street, Hartlepool, at 10.43pm on Friday.
He was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough,where he is in a critical condition.
A 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and a 32-year-old woman on suspicion of assault,
A cordon remained in place around the house this morning.
One neighbour told the Mail: "You get the odd argument here, but no more than you would expect anywhere else.
"It's quite a quiet area, so you don't expect anything like this to happen."
Another said: "I didn't know anything about it until the police arrived in the street.
"There were a lot of police and two ambulances, so it seemed like a big incident."
A Cleveland Police spokesman said: "The man found with serious head injuries remains critical in hospital.
"The man and woman arrested in connection with the incident have been bailed pending further inquires."
Officers believe the attack may be linked to an earlier incident at an address in St Oswalds Street, Hartlepool, at 8.33pm on Friday.
There, the front door was boarded up and a window was peppered with what appear to be bullet holes.
