POLICE are appealing for witness as they investigate a deliberate fire at a house and vandalism to four cars.

Officers from Peterlee CID say a young man escaped injury after a shed close to the house he was sleeping in was deliberately set alight.

The garden shed was completely destroyed and the blaze caused external damage to the house in Christchurch Place, Peterlee.

Police were alerted by County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service shortly before 5.15pm on Saturday.

Detective Constable Martin Wilson, of Peterlee CID, said it was believed that the shed had been set alight deliberately.

Fortunately the 19-year-old man in the house at the time was not injured.

An appliance from Peterlee Fire Station was sent to the incident around 5.05pm on Saturday.

Firefighters spent just under an hour tackling the flames.

Four cars in the area - a black Renault Clio, a silver-coloured Toyota Yaris, a black Peugeot 107 and a yellow VW Beetle also had paint sprayed onto them on Saturday afternoon.

Anyone with information about either incident is urged to get in touch with police at Peterlee on 101.
