A serving prison officer has been released on police bail after being arrested as part of a major national probe.

Met Police officers from Operation Elveden arrested a 45-year old man for misconduct in a public office (contrary to common law).

The man, a serving prison officer, was arrested at an address in Hartlepool.

He was in police custody following the arrest on Tuesday morning and has since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Operation Elveden is an ongoing British police investigation, which was opened as a result of documents provided by News International to the Operation Weeting investigation.

The operation is an investigation into allegations of inappropriate payments to police and is being supervised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
