A POLICE investigation has been launched into an “unexplained” death after a body was found in a house.

Detectives are trying to work out how a 50-year-old Hartlepool man died at an address in Campbell Road, in the Rossmere area.

Police were called to the terraced street at 12.45pm on Thursday shortly after the body was discovered, and the property was still taped off yesterday.

Neighbours told the Mail of their shock at seeing police in their road as scenes of crime officers and detectives visited the house on both days.

Uniformed police officers have also been keeping guard at the front gate of the home.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “The death is currently being treated as unexplained and inquiries are ongoing.”

The Mail understands a post-mortem examination has been carried out and detectives are awaiting the results of further tests as they try and clarify the cause of death.

One resident, who did not want to be named, told the Mail that the man who died is thought to have been lodging with a couple at the address.

He added: “It’s strange to see the police here and it makes you wonder what has happened.

“Whatever has happened, it’s obviously a great shame.”
