An investigation has been sparked after fire fighters turned out to tackle an early hours car blaze in Hartlepool.

A silver Mazda 3 car was badly damaged in the fire at Eddleston Walk in the town, at about 12.06am this morning.

Police and two crews from Stranton Fire Station attended the scene, with the cause of the blaze now being probed.

Fire chiefs believe the vehicle may have been deliberately torched.

Chris Williams, crew manager at Stranton Fire Station, said: "We had two fire pumps at the scene for about 45 minutes.

"The police were also in attendance.

"It was a possible deliberate ignition of the car.

"The car was parked on the street.

"The fire was contained to the car, causing damage to the engine bay."
