HOMEOWNERS are being warned of a spate of break-ins to garages and outbuildings.

Hartlepool Police say there has been an increase in the number of burglaries of outbuildings and garages during which a number of pedal bikes have been stolen.

The warning has been issued in particular to people living in the Bishop Cuthbert and Throston areas of the town.

Police advice is to take the following steps:

• If garages are fitted with alarms use them and consider fitting additional locks;

• Garage-stored pedal cycles should be locked together and securely fixed to a bracket on the wall or floor;

• If cars and vans are not parked in garages, park them close up to the garage doors to make access more difficult.

Residents are also reminded to report any suspicious behaviour to police on the non emergency number 101.

Further crime prevention advice if needed is available from PC Steve Davies, crime prevention officer, on (01642) 302579.
