AN appeal to householders to keep their rubbish and garden areas secure has been made by firefighters after a spate of small fires in Hartlepool last night.
Crews from Hartlepool Stranton fire station dealt with four fires in just over two hours in Owton Manor and West View.
“The fires themselves were not serious,” said a spokesman for Cleveland Fire Brigade. “But householders can reduce the risk by not leaving rubbish out overnight, and by keeping gardens and yards as secure as possible.
“We would also ask those who are starting the fires to think carefully about what they are doing.
“Any fire, no matter how small, can spread with unpredictable consequences.”
