DETECTIVES are appealing for witnesses after a dog was killed in a blaze at stables.

A man was arrested by Peterlee CID and later bailed following a fire that affected four stables and four kennels at allotments near Luke Terrace and Quilstyle Road, in Wheatley Hill.

One dog perished and another was rescued following the blaze, which happened around 9pm on Wednesday.

Anyone with information is urged to contact either Detective Constable Lee Fishburn, at Peterlee CID, on 101 or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Peterlee Police would also like to hear from anyone with information about a stable blaze off Market Crescent, Wingate, which caused £4,400 of damage and happened around the same time.

The owner had managed to get the horses out, but damage was caused to a container which stored horse tack and two generators.

Witnesses to the Wingate blaze should call PC Rob Mellenthin or PC Steve Rowe, on the numbers above.

Fire crews attended both incidents.
